Before eroding a product mask to remove a dark outline, ask Claude Opus 5.5 to inspect how the receiving application interprets alpha. Straight and premultiplied color values require different handling. A correct silhouette can acquire a fringe when color is multiplied by opacity twice. Keep the original asset and compare interpretations before editing the product's shape.

Adobe explains alpha interpretation, including dark halos when premultiplied footage is treated as straight. This is one cause, not a diagnosis for every edge. A screenshot cannot establish the file's channel representation, and the same alpha values can accompany different RGB values.

A small calculation explains double multiplication

Take a fictional linear-light foreground RGB of (0.8, 0.4, 0.2), alpha 0.25 and an opaque background (0.1, 0.1, 0.1). Premultiplied foreground RGB is (0.2, 0.1, 0.05). Correct source-over composition gives (0.275, 0.175, 0.125). If that already multiplied foreground is incorrectly multiplied again, the result is (0.125, 0.1, 0.0875): a darker edge.

These values were calculated locally using the source-over composition rule. They are teaching values in a shared linear working space, not measurements of a PNG, screenshot or model output. Do not apply the calculation blindly to display-encoded RGB or assume it identifies the matte color in an unknown file. At alpha zero, division cannot recover an original foreground color.

Ask for evidence before destructive cleanup

Diagnose the edge of this transparent product overlay. I provide the original file, exporter settings, receiving application settings, an alpha view, and native-size crops over light, dark and colored backgrounds. Separate alpha interpretation, contaminated edge colors and resampling. Preserve the original. For the illustrative linear RGB (0.8,0.4,0.2), alpha 0.25 and opaque background (0.1,0.1,0.1), show correct source-over and the result of multiplying an already premultiplied foreground again. Do not infer channel representation from a screenshot alone. Propose a reversible import-setting comparison before mask erosion. Return the evidence needed, the smallest candidate change and an acceptance checklist for fine straps, holes and translucent material. Mark missing evidence and do not claim an export or model test you did not run.

The Opus guide is the model reference; this proposed review has not been executed with Opus. A 2016 WebGL community question provides a historical edge-blending problem, not proof about your editor or current model performance.

Compare the same asset, then decide

Use the same crop, background, scale and color settings for each candidate. In After Effects, the documented route is Interpret Footage, Main, then the Alpha interpretation controls. Select the interpretation supported by the export evidence; a matte-color option requires the correct original matte. If neither interpretation fixes it, return to the source mask and transformation history rather than repeatedly shrinking the outline.

Verify holes, narrow straps, soft fabric and translucent glass at native size and delivery size. A clean hard silhouette does not prove glass is correct. For opaque white rectangles and basic transparency checks, use the transparent-product-image guide. After the source edge is dependable, use it as a product reference in Panelly Studio to create a finished ad. This is not a claim of Opus integration or a promise of alpha-preserving output.

Edge questions

Should I always choose straight alpha?

No. The receiving interpretation must match the source representation and export contract. Changing a label does not repair damaged pixels.

Will a one-pixel inward mask solve it?

It may hide a fringe while cutting away real material. Test interpretation first and compare the silhouette before accepting erosion.

Can Opus determine the format from the file name?

No reliable conclusion follows from a name alone. Supply file metadata, exporter settings and controlled comparisons, and retain uncertainty when they conflict.
